Sleep paralysis is a temporary inability to move or speak while falling asleep or upon waking. It occurs when the transition between sleep stages is disrupted. Sleep paralysis can be accompanied by hallucinations and intense fear. It is usually harmless but may indicate underlying sleep disorders.
