Having grown up and gone to school in West Cumbria I returned to Cumbria in 1993 and have been a GP at St Paul’s/Carlisle Healthcare ever since. I have post graduate qualifications in Forensic Medicine and Ethics and have studied sports medicine with a time as club Doctor for Carlisle United. As well as working in leadership for the practice and the CCG I have clinical interests in Mental Health and Musculo-skeletal medicine. My aim, in the last few years of my career, is to try to find ways to bridge the gap between what our patients need and the lack of resource we have to meet that need.

I was born and went to school in Carlisle and did my training in Newcastle and the North East. It’s great to be practising medicine in the area where I grew up and I never feel that I have chosen the wrong career despite the challenges that are facing the NHS. I have a particular interest in women’s health – including, contraception, sexual health and menopause issues. I am married with four children and in my spare time I enjoy singing, acting, keeping bees and most recently sheep!.

I graduated from the University of Dundee with honours in 1999 after first obtaining a BSc (hons) in Pharmacology. After working in hospital and general practice I developed an interest in eye health, obtaining my membership to the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2005. In 2007, I decided to combine my GP training with my interest in ophthalmology and became a GP with Special Interest. I joined St Paul’s Medical Centre in 2009 (now part of Carlisle Healthcare) and have worked part time in general practice while developing a community eye service in Carlisle and Workington. In recent years, I have also co-authored 3 papers aimed at GP education on eye health, in the British Medical Journal.

I came to Carlisle in 1999 as a GP registrar at St Pauls medical centre after spending a few years in hospital in Birmingham as a medic mainly in elderly care. I am the practice education lead and a GP trainer as well as supporting trainee nurse practitioners within the practice and teaching medical students. I spent 3 years working for P&O cruises as a ships doctor before returning as a partner in 2006. I trained at Leeds qualifying in 1992. Worked there in an oncology hospital for 2 years before taking a year out for an extended travelling honeymoon. Returned and trained to be a GP in Bradford and Howarth where I specialised further in palliative care. I joined Brunswick house in 1999 as a full time partner sharing a role between the practice and Eden Valley Hospice. When the practice opted to stop providing medical cover, I was asked if I would consider staying on at EVH as a medical officer , so I reduced to part time and now do 2 sessions at EVH day hospice and help with their on-call rota. I have particular interests in palliative care, mental health and some dermatology.
